Why Would God Use Me?

This past week I have spent cramming my head with Genesis through Deuteronomy. I was so troubled by some of the things that I had to text Pastor Homer and ask “Why would God use Sarah and Abraham? They were awful.”

Genesis 16 1 Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had a
female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar. 2And Sarai said to Abram, "Behold
now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children. Go in to my servant; it
may be that I shall obtain children[a] by her." And Abram listened to the voice
of Sarai. 3So, after Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai,
Abram’s wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant, and gave her to Abram her
husband as a wife. 4And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw
that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress.[b] 5And Sarai
said to Abram, "May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my servant to your
embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with
contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me!" 6But Abram said to Sarai,
"Behold, your servant is in your power; do to her as you please." Then Sarai
dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her.

Pastor Homer’s answer was surprisingly simple. He related Sarah and Abraham to my computer, which if I would make a list of all the things wrong with it would be very long. The question he asked me is, “Do you not still use your computer?” The answer is yes. Yes, I do still use my computer, despite all the imperfections. In fact, it is still very useful and still gets the job done. Is that not what Sarah and Abraham did?

If a book was written on my life, I’m sure that people would think the same thing, “Why did God use her?” I can tell you now that God uses me because I am willing, not because I am perfect. I think it’s empowering knowing that the wrong I have done does not make God love me any less.

All I have to say is, “God, use me.”

  1. It has been said that God is not seeking vessels of silver or gold, He is seeking vessels that are available. He will use golden vessels if they are available, but he will also use me, a clay pot.
