Hey guys, I know Christmas is getting very close and with shopping, plays, programs, parties, dinners and school it is easy to get overwhelmed. I would like for everyone who takes a couple minutes to read this to also place a comment and read the other comments. Comment on your favorite Christmas memory from your childhood. It doesn't have to be a specific event that happened, it can be a fond memory of a family tradition that may be unique to your family. Anything that made Christmas extra special to you as a child. Don't feel like it has to be 500 words, it can be one sentence. But I will go first. Check comments for my special Christmas memory!
Love you guys and MERRY CHRISTMAS!
The thing that made Christmas so special to me as a child isn't necessarily unique to my family, but maybe my perception was a little unique. The whole Christmas season seemed surreal to me. It's like for a few weeks every Winter the whole world turned into this fantasy world. There were bright colorful lights everywhere you looked. Beautiful ornamental decorations on almost every house, in every store and window. There seemed to always be a Christmas special on TV and everyone seemed to be in a good mood. Every house smelled wonderful as mothers and grandmothers were baking cakes and pies and cookies. There was the thick, decadent smell of fudge and candies of all sorts being made, and this came weeks prior to the actual Christmas Day meal. I almost felt like I lived in one of those funny Christmas cartoons I would watch every year. I don't know if this is how every small child perceived Christmas time or if it was just me or only my generation. But I pray, for the sake of my own children, that Christmas time does feel just as dream-like to them as it did for me. I LOVE CHRISTmas!
ReplyDeleteWe always got a real tree when I was little and one year my brother Travis pulled it over THREE times, water sloshing everywhere and my parents were getting pretty upset. Then, Travis sneezed and in a giant snot bubble was a double pine needle. It totally redeemed Christmas and we all laughed again. Ok, well that was not a sweet memory, but something i remember nonetheless. haha
ReplyDeleteI remember decorating my grandmother's house especially. She was into crafts, painting limbs white, making ornaments with glitter and eggshells, making Santa and Ms. Santa out of old Reader's Digests, and stringing lights up the banister. It was an older house, and we lived next door, so we would ask to help her. Then, on Christmas Eve, my dad's side would meet there, have dinner and open presents. I can remember as kids dying for the adults (i.e., women of the family) to finish up cleaning the dishes so we could get at them. There was something about that house and Christmas Eve celebrations there that have stuck with me the most.
ReplyDeleteI was looking at this again and did not anyone to get the impression that we whitewashed each others arms and legs because I belonged in a cult or something. We painted tree limbs, more like fallen twigs, painted and made mini decorati......nevermind.
ReplyDeleteI think mine would have to be just getting to spend time with the family and people I love because I mean I'm bad about this but i play Football and do so much that there are times that i get to overwhelmed and to be honest it happens a lot so i mean getting to spend time with just family and friends and people that i love is what makes my Christmas great
ReplyDeleteSince elementary school I felt pressure of buying gifts for others with whatever amount of money my parents would give me. Christmas was stressful. My Aunt Leanna would always so "I don"t give to get presents." She is the true definition of a cheerful giver.
ReplyDeletePerhaps that's why when I got a phone call many years back (from my dad) and he told me that my cousin's (Drew's and Chryssa's) house had been broken into and their presents stolen, I immediately told him to return what he had bought me and give to them.
That's the first time the "Christmas Spirit" felt real and not like an unreasonable demand.
I love Christmas now and know that kind acts are every bit as big of a part of Christmas as presents. After all, it's all about Jesus(:
*would always say
