This past Sunday Homer, Isaac, Drew, Jason, and myself, met at Celebration Church to do some street ministering. We split up in two groups and talked about the area we'd be covering. Homer did a prayer and we were on our way.
The thing is, I was concerned. Not about my safety but about Jason. He has been absolutely on fire for this ministry and I worried that if we didn't get anyone in the church right away that he would be discouraged. He kept saying things like "When we get them here..." and I thought, "this isn't going to be good if no one comes."
Our experience was much different than I expected. I'm writing this now, after days of thinking about it. After days of making sure it wasn't arrogance of "my accomplishment" but GLORY TO GOD!
I'll keep this as brief as possible and let Jason tell his own half of the story (we were in opposite groups).
When Drew, myself, and Homer first started walking we just looked for people outside to talk to. We said a few "hellos" but nothing eventful was happening. When we started knocking on the doors most people either told us they already attended church or showed obvious disinterest and sent us on our way.
We came to a house with the door open. I knocked and Homer told me that she said "come in." There on the chair across from us was an old lady who offered us to take a seat. She has trouble walking but showed interest in the church. We left a contact number for her and started to leave. Most may not know, but I'm shy talking to strangers, so it surprised me when God told me to ask if she needed prayed for. The three of us held her hand and she said she wanted us to pray for her illness. I was even more surprised that it was my voice that did the praying and not Homer's. That was the first time I've ever prayed over anyone.
It's remarkable what God will do when you go out for him. I don't know if Juanita will call of if she'll be at church Sunday, but what I do know is we showed her love. Not a day has passed that I haven't thought of her.
With that being said, we will need support in what we are doing. To some of us, most of us, this is very new. God is using our youth, and our Church to change Huntington, to change the tri-sate, to change the world!
Maybe we should have more of a "when" point of view than an "if" point of view. Jason may be younger but he is still teaching me.
We serve an Awesome God!
3 John 1:5-8
Beloved, it is a faithful thing you do in all your efforts for these brothers, strangers as they are, who testified to your love before the church. You will do well to send them on their journey in a manner worthy of God. For they have gone out for the sake of the name, accepting nothing from the Gentiles. Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.
