In my godfather's final days he was visited by the many people whose live's he touched. I was there to see a few people come and go. The last of which left an impression on me that I then associated with nearly all of the older generation
It was unfair of me to assume that all old Christian men and women approached life and people with the same cynical view.
I'm sure you may be wondering what this old couple visiting my godfather had fo say that made me so bitter...
They had a grandson(or grandaughter, I forget the details) that had previously started going to a new church, perhaps for the first time by choice. They were at first delighted, thinking he was on fire for God. They accepted an invite to the passionate boy's church... their experience there caused them to doubt the boy's love and drive for God.
What changed from point A go point B?
THEY CHANGED THE MUSIC!
These grandparent's went home believing their grandson went to church for a rock concert, not for God.
I was angry at them for not joining in the grandson's love of Jesus. I was hurt that they did not support him.
I know now it is unfair for me to judge their generation the same way they judged mine.
I had a guest speaker sometime last semester at my college that brought some insight to the matter.
He was raised on hyms. He knew all the words. Never did he open a hymnal. When his church changed (or he changed churches) suddenly contemporary music was being played with lyrics shining on the wall...
His first reaction...
WHAT IS GOING ON!
God has a funny way of doing things. This man now had to pay attention to what he was singing.
The change in music put an end to his going through the motions.
God knows what he is doing.
I'm ready for some hymns!
